Saving the small things that run the planet
England has a huge diversity of landscapes. From the dramatic uplands in the North and the Peak District in the Midlands, to the wetlands of the Fens and Broads in the East, down to the Thames Estuary and chalk downland in the South East and the coastal cliffs of the South West. England also has vast swathes of agricultural landscape, urban centres and ex-industrial brownfield sites.
Our projects stretch the length and breadth of the country and help both to restore more habitat for invertebrates, and raise awareness of them – particularly pollinating insects on grasslands and heathlands. We also work to support the recovery of some of the UK’s most threatened invertebrates including the White-clawed Crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) in the Midlands, the Blue Ground Beetle (Carabus intricatus), Lundy Cabbage Flea Beetle (Psylliodes luridipennis), Horrid Ground-weaver Spider (Nothophantes horridus) and Narrow-headed Ant (Formica exsecta) in the South West, and Wormwood Moonshiner beetle (Amara fusca) and Wart-biter Bush-cricket (Decticus verrucivorus) in the South and East.

Buglife England’s achievements include:
- Working with others to deliver over 92 hectares of wildflower-rich B-Lines habitat.
- Establishing new populations of the Ladybird Spider in Dorset, the Narrow-headed Ant in Devon, and the Wart-biter Bush-cricket in Sussex.
- Creating Ark sites for White-clawed Crayfish across the South West and the Midlands.
- Winning Gold at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival for ‘The B-Lines Garden’
- Discovering new populations of the rare Blue Ground Beetle in Devon and Cornwall.
- Saving invertebrate havens from development such as Swanscombe Peninsula, Canvey Wick and Radford Quarry.
