Buglife Cymru is seeking to appoint a full-time Conservation Officer to deliver our Coal Spoil Connections project. Working across the South Wales Valleys you will oversee invertebrate surveys, provide habitat management advice, deliver a variety of engagement events, training and workshops, produce educational resources and disseminate project learnings including delivery of a South Wales Coal Spoil conference.

We are looking for an engaging and enthusiastic person with invertebrate identification, habitat management and engagement experience to deliver this exciting project.  Experience of partnership working involving community groups, volunteers, Councils and landowners is required.

Buglife Conservation Officers conserve invertebrates and their habitats by influencing others and by managing and enhancing the environment. Individual work plans are set according to organisational strategy, funds obtained and the skills and aspirations of the individual Conservation Officer.

This project is funded by the Nature Networks Programme. It is being delivered by the Heritage Fund, on behalf of the Welsh Government.

Do you have?

  • Proven experience at undertaking habitat management projects;
  • Experience of working with landowners, managers and contractors;
  • Good level of ecological knowledge and understanding of conservation issue;
  • Experience of raising public awareness of conservation/environmental issues;
  • Some botanical knowledge;
  • Experience of engaging volunteers and local communities in species-focused projects;
  • Experience of working in partnership with other organisations, including volunteers, landowners and contractors;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including report-writing;
  • Good computer skills, including use of internet, email, Microsoft Office and Excel;
  • Excellent organisational skills, including time management;
  • Full, current driving license.

This is a full-time, fixed term contract until 31 December 2025. You will be based at our Cardiff office in St. Mellons, although some home working will be possible. A flexible
approach to the working pattern will be considered for the successful candidate.
