Our Work

Buglife has a wealth of practical conservation work predominantly within the UK. With so many species to choose from Buglife has to prioritise work areas meaning that the current focus is predominantly on pollinators and freshwater habitats, however as the only custodian of so many invertebrates action is also taken to save species at risk of UK extinction and sites of major importance that are under threat. Much of this work is leading by example developing best possible interactions to nurture species and then sharing with others to ensure the greatest impact for invertebrates,
Many of these best practice projects have subsequently been adopted by national and local governments thus gaining in status and effect. For instance the flagship B-Lines pollinator connectivity project has been funded by all UK governments and seen as integral to local pollinator strategies.

Back from the Brink

Together we can bring our threatened species back from the brink.

B-Lines

Imagine trying to travel around Britain without our road and rail network. Or imagine if nine out of every ten miles of road just didn’t exist – life would be impossible!

Brownfields

Brownfields are land that has been altered by human activity (not including farmland or commercial forestry). Not just the derelict urban areas that first spring to mind, but quarries, brick-pits, old railway lines and disused airfields.

Freshwater

Freshwater is vital to a huge amount of life on Earth, including human life. Freshwater only accounts for approximately 0.7% of all the water on the planet (if you exclude freshwater frozen in ice caps and glaciers), but is teeming with wildlife. It is an extremely important wildlife habitat in the UK.

Important Invertebrate Areas

Important Invertebrate Areas (IIAs) are nationally or internationally significant places for the conservation of invertebrates and the habitats upon which they rely.

Living Roof Projects

Buglife is championing the use of green or ‘living’ roofs as a way of making more habitat for bugs.

Species Recovery Projects

With so many species under threat, we literally don’t know what we are on the brink of losing. Buglife is working hard to find out more about bugs and what they need, focusing on those under the greatest threat.

Donate to support us

Our work would not be possible without your support. Bees and other invertebrates need help to reverse the catastrophic declines in their numbers. Please donate today and together we can restore vital habitats and rebuild strong populations of invertebrates in the UK.
