Open Mosaic Habitat Inventory

The Open Mosaic Habitat Inventory is the first national inventory of wildlife-rich brownfields, which distinguishes open mosaic habitat (OMH) from other brownfields or previously modified land.

The Open Mosaic Habitat Inventory is a valuable tool for anyone with an interest in nature conservation or local planning, but particularly for local authorities, strategic planners, ecologists and local wildlife groups.

Steven Falk

The inventory was commissioned by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), and made possible by funding from Defra, Natural England and Natural Resources Wales. Buglife sat on the project steering group and provided expert input throughout the development of this exciting new resource.

The new “Open Mosaic Habitat Assessment Form” is a reliable and rapid way of identifying open mosaic habitat in the field which is likely to be of value for invertebrates.

The accompanying “Open Mosaic Habitat Survey Handbook” provides useful information on using the form and understanding the habitats which contribute to wildlife-rich brownfields.

Through the Habitat Surveys website you can use interactive maps to search for open mosaic habitat around the UK, or even use your own survey results to contribute to this exciting new resource.
