Join the Big Pollinator Survey to help wildlife groups understand how Torbay’s bees are faring

Monday 20th June 2016

Wildlife charity Buglife and Torbay Council have launched a new “Big Pollinator Survey” as part of their Torbay’s Buzzing project which aims to help stop the decline in Torbay’s bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects.

People across Torbay are invited to take part in a “Big Pollinator Survey” over the Summer to see how the wildlife on their doorstep is doing. Taking part is easy, and doesn’t require any previous bug knowledge!  Find a copy of the survey form on our website , take it out in the garden or to your local park and count the bees, hoverflies and other pollinating insects that you see.  Please send us your results by post, or via our website.

Torbay’s MP Kevin Foster helped to launch the survey, and said “One of the most regular issues raised with me by residents is the future of the bee and the need to protect our nation’s busiest pollinators. The Big Pollinator Survey is not just a chance to call for action, but to take action yourself and make a real difference.”

Joanne Gilvear, Buglife’s Torbay’s Buzzing Officer said “We have launched this survey to help us get a better understanding of the types and numbers of our key pollinating insects in Torbay.  We also hope that adults and children will enjoy getting to know the wildlife on their doorstep.”

Joanne added “Torbay’s Buzzing is planting meadows and pollinator cafes across Torquay, Paignton and Brixham.  The result of the survey will help us to understand how the project is benefitting our local wildlife.  We need as many people as possible to get involved so please take five minutes to get involved in our Big Pollinator Survey!”
