Plymouth’s Buzzing with another award nomination

Tuesday 4th November 2014

Wildflower Meadows across Plymouth have been nominated for a 2014 Abercrombie Award. The awards are a celebration of planning and design excellence within Plymouth and the effort that has gone into improving our city over recent years. Wild flower meadows have been nominated as Best Green Project. There is tough competition so please vote for Wildflower Meadows. Voting closes Thursday 6 November 2014.

These meadows are really important as many of the pollinating insects that are moving into them are in decline due to the national loss of their habitat. A massive 3,000,000 hectares of flower-rich grassland have been lost in the UK since World War Two – these flower-rich areas were vital habitats for wild bees and other insects to nest and feed. As a result this has caused large declines in UK pollinators as well as other invertebrates.

This citywide Wildflower Meadows project is part funded by Heritage Lottery Fund through the Plymouth’s Buzzing project led by Buglife in partnership with Plymouth City Council.

Volunteers have helped plant over 5,000 wild flowers plug plants and 1,900 flowering bulbs to compliment the 52 kg of wildflower seed that has been sown.

Work has continued in 2014 with the creation of more wildflower meadows in Whitleigh, Mount Gould and Plymstock and bee verges – wild flower verges on the approach roads to the city. Plymouth has also been shortlisted for a national Grow Wild funding award for City to Sea.
