Identifying Invertebrates

Once you start spotting, you will progress quite quickly.

It’s a realistic goal to be able to recognise the main groups of insects, and many of the other invertebrates.

Identification to species level is only practical if there is a good identification guide. For most people, there are plenty of ‘do-able’ invertebrates. Some bugs remain difficult or very specialist.

Most people will wish to concentrate on what can be identified live or ‘captured’ only in photographs.

A hand lens can help with the finer details when your eye is not quite sharp enough.

If you would like some help with your identification, OPAL’s iSpot is a great resource. You can upload pictures of your mystery bug and an online community of experts will help identify it.
