Big Bumblebee Hunt
Buglife's first-ever bumblebee survey for London, Essex and the Thames Gateway got local residents out and about to count bumblebees in their neighbourhood during summer 2007.
Thank you to everyone who took part in the Big Bumblebee Hunt in 2007. Buglife received good public support in our first-ever Big Bumblebee Hunt this summer, as people sent in their records of bumblebee sightings in their local area and took part in the number of events happening across the south-east of England.
The fun and easy-to-use survey was developed in response to two pressing problems: the dramatic decline of bumblebee numbers in the last fifty years; and the loss of brownfield sites to development, one of the last important strongholds for some of the rarer species. By taking part in the survey, people had the chance to save this well-loved insect and help us build a picture of where bumblebees are living within the Thames Gateway.
