Education and Outreach Officer: project under development
Engaging a new generation of invertebrate enthusiasts is a key challenge for Buglife. The Education and Outreach Officer will focus on visiting schools and other youth related events to encourage a younger audience to take an active interest in invertebrate conservation.
Objective
To raise awareness and educate a wider audience on invertebrate conservation, particularly by developing an existing interest in ‘bugs’ in younger people.
Assessment of need
Buglife currently receives an enormous number of requests to visit schools, attend events, give talks, host walks and get involved in other activities. In addition to the demand for Buglife’s attendance at a range of activities we receive constant requests for suitable outreach material to be displayed at various venues. With our current resources and personnel capacity we are able to satisfy less than 5% of the demand.
Aims
- Develop a range of educational material compatible with the national curriculum focusing particularly on key stage 2.
- Develop minibeast roadshow for schools and events.
- Develop education material for the website.
- Develop new and enhance existing Buglife outreach material.
- Visit schools and other youth related events and engage young people in invertebrate conservation.
- Edit & produce Buglife youth newsletter.
- Represent Buglife at a range of events including specialist audience events such as garden, fishing, agricultural shows.
- Give presentation to various interest groups.
- Host bug walks and other outdoor invertebrate related activities.
- Organise art competition and exhibitions.
