Fun ways to help bugs!

Do a fun run, hold a cake-bake, do a sponsored skip, run a half-marathon! This is the International Year of Biodiversity and as we celebrate wildlife across the UK, do something fun, sporty, creative or just plain silly to help conserve bugs

2 February 2010

Put the FUN into FUNdraising!

Buglife has now registered with Just Giving to enable you to raise funds to conserve amazing invertebrates. All you need to do is:

1. Have an idea

Come up with a fun, sporty or creative way to get your friends and family to sponsor you

2. Make your page

Just follow the easy guidance on the Just Giving website. You can write your own story about why you are supporting Buglife and add photos

3. Get fundraising

Tell people about what you are doing and ask them to sponsor you. Donations are made securely online and the money comes to Buglife to support our conservation work

4. Tell us about it!

Please contact us to tell us you are raising funds for Buglife. We can promote your efforts on our website or in our newsletters and support you by providing information about our work and bug photos

Need ideas?

Here are some fantastic ideas to get you going...

Run for bugs - are you a serious/semi-serious runner taking part in a half-marathon this year? Why not run for Buglife?

Bug Hunt - can you find 20 different bugs in half an hour? Do a sponsored bug hunt in a wildlife area at your school or college and ask your classmates to sponsor you. Note - get permission first!

Cake-bake - hold a cake-bake at your workplace and ask your colleagues to take part. Cake bakers make a donation to enter and you all enjoy sampling the cakes. Give a certificate to the baker of the best cake.

Lose it for Bugs - if the pounds have crept on over Christmas, why not lose weight and have your friends sponsor you. It'll be a great motivator!
Note - please take medical advice before undertaking any weight loss programme

Don't stop skipping! - or jumping, throwing beanbags into buckets, or running on the spot... One lunchtime could the children in your class do a fun sponsored activity for 15 minutes?

Walk, cycle or swim - get healthy and get fundraising at the same time! Set a target for yourself and ask family, friends and colleagues to sponsor you

Do something silly! - Do you fancy having bright pink or green hair for a weekend or need some motivation to have your beard shaved off? Why not do something silly to raise money for conservation?

Have a Big Bug Day - come in fancy dress (bug-themed of course!), have a virtual bug hunt in the office/school hall at lunchtime with plastic bugs and hold a bug poetry competition! Participants make a donation to take part and everyone has fun!

Shhh - be quiet for bugs - could you be silent for a whole day? Why not give your friends a rest from your chattering and do a sponsored silence?

Do something together!

Raising funds to conserve bugs could be a great way to bring your class, company, department or friends together during 2010. Raise money to conserve the small things that run the world and have fun at the same time.

Steve says: "I am not a bug expert but I wanted to help Buglife raise some money for bugs. So, I am ‘losing it for bugs’. I hope to raise £500 for bugs by losing 6 stone in a year. This means I need to lose between one and two pounds each week."

Sally - Running for Bugs!

Sally is a student who is running the Sheffield half-marathon to raise money for Buglife.

Sally said "I love insects; they are generally forgotten about when people think of the natural world and conservation, with many charities focusing on more charismatic species, such as the Panda or Polar Bear. We need to remember the little critters!"
