Rugged oil beetle survey

This autumn we are searching for the fascinating yet threatened Rugged oil beetle and we need your help!

The Rugged oil beetle (Meloe rugosus) is one of our rarest oil beetles and we need your help to create a map of its distribution to help our conservation work.

As the name suggests, the Rugged oil beetle has a rough or rugged appearance in comparison with its smoother and shinier relatives. Click on the link to download the oil beetle identification guide

The Rugged oil beetle can be found in central and southern England and south Wales, the adult beetles are active from September to April. Particular hotspots for this beetle seem to be Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, but the beetle has also been found along the south coast from South Devon to Brighton.
