The Wet, Weird and Wonderful World of Garden Insects, (PL002, Physics/Electronics Building) University of York, 23rd June 2010, 6:30pm to 9pm
Wet: Diving, dipping and darting – the incredible underwater world of pond insects. Join a Buglife expert as they take you on a safari exploring the amazing world of pond insects that live both above and below the watery depths of our garden ponds. From the athletic and graceful water boatmen to the ferocious dragonfly larvae, find out what lurks below the surface.
Weird: Squeaking, scratching and scrunching – the weird world of insect sounds. Your garden is a very noisy place but you may never hear most of the sounds. Dave Chesmore will guide you through the amazing sounds insects make, from caterpillars talking to each other and grasshoppers singing to find a mate to the hidden world of leafhoppers, the insect “drummers”.
Wonderful: Be amazed ... Be amused ... Be afraid ... It's Buzzing! Anneliese Emmans Dean performs her award-winning multimedia eco-show in celebration of garden insects. There'll be butterflies and bees, music and mirth, verse and verve. You'll never look at your garden in the same way again!
